Online counselling

face to face counselling in brighton

Why would I want online counselling?

Online therapy is ideal for people with schedules that require appointments to be exactly when they need them. It takes no longer to get to your session than the time it takes to log on to your device.

This way of meeting is used by people in other parts of the world and has been the only way of working during the covid19 crisis.

Online sessions offer all the audio-visual aspects of counselling but without the felt presence of the person in the room. This way of working may be easier for people where social anxiety is an issue or for those with more isolative tendencies.

You may be going through a particularly difficult situation: separation, trauma, or other huge life change or you may just have the feeling that something isn’t quite right without knowing how or why.

It can feel like everything is a knot of confused feelings, impulses and images.

You might have ideas or reactions which lead to unwanted actions. Or you might be feeling stuck and want to find a way through.

Whichever way you choose to have your sessions discretion and complete confidentiality are guaranteed. As a BACP accredited counsellor I uphold all the ethical requirements of the profession. In my 10 years’ experience of counselling I have worked with people experiencing a wide range of difficulties including anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, co-dependency, loss, bereavement, eating disorders, anger management, P.T.S.D, substance misuse, family breakdown, relationship issues, suicidal ideation, transgender issues, historic or present day abuse and many others.

How will therapy help?

In online counselling, I would work with you so that we can examine what’s going on and discover more of what is underlying your distress.

I would help you to express what is in your mind and to share your feelings in a safe environment. This supported self-reflective space may be enough to enable you to find new perspectives. However, I would also help you to discover what may be on the edge of your awareness. There may be patterns that are not immediately obvious.

what if I have always felt like this?

It can feel like being anxious or generally down is part of who we are and it can be difficult to imagine life could be any other way. Real change is possible but can sometimes feel scarier than staying in uncomfortable yet familiar ways of being. Online counselling will support you to make this change.

While therapy may take time, I believe that positive steps towards change become easier and more possible with the help of a good therapeutic relationship you can trust. Working together I can help you find different responses and ways of reacting to difficulties or enable you to identify what may be lacking in your life.

Coming to therapy can seem daunting, however you choose what we discuss and at what pace. While I will offer you my thoughts, I will not push you in any way. I consider the counselling relationship to be a collaborative creative space which should feel comfortable and free from anxiety and pressure in which new perspectives can emerge.

how long will online counselling take?

Open ended therapy is where the end is not fixed from the start, so can be of any length.  It is an opportunity to create a space in which to explore and think more deeply about your life and concerns.  The process comes to an end when you are ready to leave.

can I have a short term online counselling?

Short term therapy (normally 6-16 sessions) is for when you want to focus on a particular issue, gain some clarity or come to a resolution about your feelings or direction.  It is also useful to get a taste of what therapy can do for you or to gain an understanding of what issues seem to be most important.

how regularly do I have online therapy?

I see clients once or twice weekly for short term or open ended therapy. Online counselling sessions are 50 minutes per session.

Where do we connect for online counselling?

I have found that Skype and Zoom work best for online counselling and these work particularly well for international clients.

Are there alternatives to online therapy?

Yes, absolutely. In order to best suit your lifestyle we can work in a variety of different ways. This flexibility allows for you to have the best possible experience for you.
