Understanding who we are and where we stand in the world is not something that happens at birth, or at any one point in our lives. It arises from questioning, challenging and reassessing ourselves every day. There is no one answer, and it does not stay still.

how I can help

I have a special interest in how childhood experiences can continue to affect us in adult life. My approach is grounded in analytic theory. I am also influenced by attachment and trauma-based approaches and work in a relational way.

In my 10 years’ experience of counselling I have worked with people experiencing a wide range of difficulties including anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, co-dependency, loss, bereavement, eating disorders, anger management, P.T.S.D, substance misuse, family breakdown, relationship issues, suicidal ideation, transgender issues, historic or present-day abuse and many others.

Confused feelings or impulses may lead to unwanted thoughts or actions. I’ll help you to express what’s in your mind and share your feelings in a safe environment.

Collaboratively we’ll discover what may be underlying your distress as well as possibly finding patterns that are not immediately obvious. You choose what we discuss and at what pace.

Joanna Miller Therapy

‘Jo has been my therapist for over two years. Our sessions have been real lifelines for me (so much so that I’ve been having Skype therapy during Lockdown) — helping me face and understand incredibly deep-rooted traumas and issues. That makes the sessions sound “too much”. But they’re not. They have occasionally been intense – as breakthroughs should be – but Jo is warm, kind and personable so you feel safe exploring any struggles with her. She also makes you think. Which I love. I’ve been in therapy for many years but only now – with Jo – am I able to change my mindset and feel more positive about the future.’

Joanna Miller Counselling

‘I’ve recently started using Joanna as my go-to psychotherapist for quotes and observations – in the last month she’s contributed to a feature of mine in The Telegraph and been interviewed on my BBC Radio Sussex and BBC Radio Surrey show – and I love her style: accessible but really thoughtful and relevant insights, analysis and conclusions that resonate with readers and listeners.

Resonate and actually help.’

Joanna Miller Therapy

I first met Jo when seeking support as a student within my university in 2018, and once I graduated, I continued a therapy with her. Following a break up, I moved overseas and we have kept doing regular meetings online to this day. I felt less alone and less lost when going through my break up. With her, I managed to untangle family matters, which in turn helped me build self-confidence for my career in performance. During the sessions, I feel in total trust and I can open up on very personal emotions, take my time to process them and understand them. My sessions with Jo are like a conversation ; it is an opportunity to talk to someone who listens, but there is always a moment of mutual exchange. Jo Miller is a kind, patient and professional therapist, I recommend her without doubt.
